“Sadra” Publishing House issued a new book under the title of “The Dictionary of Rare Meanings and Polysemantic Words in the Qur’an”. The vocabulary was published with the assistance of Ibn Sina Foundation and the Dagestan State University.
This work was accomplished by philologists and experts in the area of Arabic and Iranian studies, by university teachers from the Faculty of Oriental Studies of the Dagestan State University: A.A. Magomedov, N.G.-A. Mamed-zadeh, L.T. Arslanmurzaeva and T.L. Kazibekov who passed away in 2020 while working on his chapter of the book.
The Dictionary of Rare Meanings and Polysemantic Words in the Qur’an is a unique work that aqcuaints a reader with Qur’anic vocabulary because many words in the classical Arabic are polysemantic, and the same word in the Quran and Hadithes may have different meanings. Some words of the classical period don’t ever exist in the Arabic-Russian Dictionary by Kh.K. Baranov, and other words mentioned in the dictionary don’t include the specific Qur’anic meanings of these notions.
The present Dictionary of Rare Meanings and Polysemantic Words is based on the selected tafsirs (commentaries) of the Qur’an.
The Dictionary will be useful for a wide circle of readers who study Arabic, as well as for experts in the area of religion and the Arabic language, especially for those who translate the Qur’an and hadithes.
